Sagehen Forest Project

The Sagehen Forest Project is gaining momentum, with a group of interested stakeholders joining together May 12, 2010 to discuss working collaboratively to design the treatment strategy to be used to restore forest resiliency to the Sagehen basin.

Future meetings will focus on the specifics of these treatments.

The effort has a new blog to share information about the project. Notes & presentations from the first meeting will be posted this week.

Adventures Among Ants.

Sagehen researcher Mark Moffett has a new book out, "Adventures Among Ants: a Global Safari with a Cast of Trillions".

Sagehen's slave-making Polyergus breviceps feature prominently.

Along the way, Moffett proposes a new hypothesis about the origin of slavery in ants & documents parallel trends for ants and humans between the size of a society and its complexity, among other fascinating new scientific content in the book.

Read his blog or watch interviews.

Argh!

High winds last week knocked a bunch of trees onto our access road & onto the Leopold Cabin roof that we only recently replaced. How does it know?!
