The other day, I dug the fish-house channel weir out of the deep snow to scrape algae off the windows & clean the leaves & pine-needles out of the screen. I found a dead mouse & a temperature logger that had broken loose from its mooring, but no dead fish.
Today, while escorting the telephone repairmen up the line, I spooked a fish at the stream surface both going out & coming back. Later, I saw an LCT in the Fish-house window.
This is great news because the big worry about the native & endangered Lahontan Cutthroat trout that we reintroduced to this segment of stream last summer is that these hatchery fish don't over-winter very well.
So far so good! While there isn't much to see in the window at this time of year, you can refer to our fish-cam page for more information about LCT's & this project.

It's raining lightly & the phones are out.
We've been using this mild weather spell to move snow & ice that accumulated during the storm. All the roofs have slid now & we're digging the snow away from the eaves to get the uneven weight off the buildings.
Jeff is the "meeting monster" at this time of year--very busy getting all the administrative ducks in a row for the coming summer season, which is shaping up to be another record setter.
Katie Fesus--the ARC Coordinator--did a follow-up session with some of the kids who were in the 6-week ESL program at Sagehen last summer. Jeff & I tagged along for the snowboarding instruction at Northstar. Fun, but painful!

It's finally stopped snowing for a while. It's hard to say how much snow we received because it depends on how often you measure the new accumulation & how quickly it settles, but here's a photo of the back of the kitchen-library building (where we didn't blow or shovel any snow away). That's a chimney in the snowbank!
We've also posted some before & after photos & descriptions of our big construction efforts since we arrived at Sagehen. Take a look!

We've added content to our fish-cam page, including downloadable highlights from "Reproductive behavior of the brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis)", a film made in the Sagehen fish-house by R.L Butler & V.M. Hawthorne.
